What is a box camera?
A mostly box-shaped camera with a fixed focal length and fixed focus. Often there is only one shutter button. Exposure is done via a simple shutter mechanism, completely without electricity.
Who is it suitable for?
For anyone who wants to discover the appeal of analog, for children and as an uncomplicated entry into medium format – many models use 120 roll film.
Why are box cameras still interesting today?
Because stripping down to the essentials feels good. No settings, no menu – just see and shoot. The look is unmistakable.
How does the shutter work?
Via a simple leaf or roller shutter that briefly lets light onto the film when shooting. The exposure time is usually fixed, typically between 1/30 and 1/60 of a second.
Can I load the film myself?
Yes, and it is easy – there is no automatic film advance. You advance it by hand and read the frame count through a viewing window on the back.
What film do I need?
Mostly 120 roll film. Some models use 620 or more rarely 135 film. Which one fits is stated in the product description.
What is the difference between 120 and 620 film?
The film width is the same, around six centimeters – but the 620 roll is narrower. Some 620 cameras can still be operated with 120 film, depending on the model.
Are there any settings?
Hardly any. Sometimes a lever for sunny and cloudy or a B mode for long exposure. Focus and time are usually fixed.
Does it still work after so many years?
Surprisingly often, yes. If the shutter works and the film type is still available, nothing stands in the way of photography.
How do we assess the condition?
Box cameras are assigned one of four classes: Good, Acceptable, Partially Defective, or Defective. The shutter, body, and viewfinder are checked. Which class an item has, you can see from the symbol at the top left of the product image and as a line below the price. More about this: How we check box cameras.
What is included in the delivery?
Usually only the camera. If anything is included, it is stated in the product title.
How long does shipping take?
Shipping times and payment methods can be found under Shipping and Payment.
How do I return an item?
On the Returns page, you can request a return. Regardless of this, your statutory right of withdrawal applies.
