Binoculars – Frequently Asked Questions
Binoculars rely on clear optics and smooth mechanics. We check both – here are the most common questions about them.

How are binoculars constructed?
They consist of two lens systems: the objective lens, prisms to orient the image, and the eyepiece. The prisms ensure that you see the image upright and correctly oriented.
What types are there?
- Roof prisms: slimmer and more robust
- Porro prisms: wider, but often offering better depth perception
What does the 8×42 specification mean?
The first number is the magnification, the second is the objective lens diameter in millimeters. A larger objective lens gathers more light – ideal in low light.
Which type is suitable for what?
- Nature and bird watching
- Travel
- Sports and concerts
- Astronomy, from about 10×50
What should I look for when buying?
Magnification, weight, objective lens diameter – and as a glasses wearer, the interpupillary distance, so that you can see the entire image.
Can I use them for viewing at night?
Not in complete darkness. For twilight and moonlight, light-gathering models such as 7×50 are suitable. True night vision requires different devices.
Are there binoculars with autofocus?
For most, you focus them by hand. Some have a fixed focus for consistent distances, such as at a stadium.
Can I use a tripod?
It is worth it from about ten times magnification. Many larger models have a thread or require an adapter.
How do we assess the condition?
Binoculars are assigned a condition rating. In addition to Good, Acceptable, and Defective, there are two optical issues: Fogging means slight condensation inside, fungus means fungus in the lens system. In both cases, the mechanics remain in good condition, but visibility may suffer. Which rating an item has is listed on a line below the price. Find out more: How we check accessories.
What is included in the delivery?
The binoculars themselves. A case, strap, or cover is only included if it is mentioned in the product title.
How long does shipping take?
You can find shipping times and payment methods under Shipping and Payment.
How do I return an item?
You can request a return on the Returns page. Regardless of this, your statutory right of withdrawal applies.
