Converters and Adapters – Frequently Asked Questions

Converters sit between the camera and the lens. Depending on their design, they extend the focal length, connect incompatible mounts, or shorten the minimum focusing distance.

What is a converter?

An intermediate piece between the camera and the lens. Depending on its type, it extends the focal length, connects to a different mount, or changes the distance to the film or sensor.

What does a teleconverter do?

It multiplies the focal length: a 2× converter turns 100 mm into 200 mm. In return, you usually lose one to two stops of light.

What does an adapter do?

It connects a lens and camera with different mounts, such as a Canon lens to a mirrorless camera. There are purely mechanical adapters and those that pass on electrical signals.

Does every converter fit every camera?

No. The mount and flange distance must match exactly. Adapters for M42, Nikon F, or Canon FD often only work in manual mode. If you have questions about compatibility, contact us via the contact form.

What does loss of automatic functions mean?

With simple adapters, autofocus, aperture control, and image stabilization are unavailable. You then expose and focus by hand.

Are there differences in quality?

Yes, especially with teleconverters. Good models largely preserve the optical quality, while simple versions can cause image defects.

What are macro extension tubes for?

They increase the distance between the lens and the film or sensor. This allows you to get closer to the subject—ideal for macro photography with a standard lens.

How do I mount an adapter safely?

Carefully place it on the camera and lens without using force. Some adapters require a release pin or align with markings on the mount.

What do we check?

All adapters and converters are checked for mechanical compatibility. Any limitations are stated in the product description. The package includes the item itself; packaging or instructions are only included if they are mentioned in the product title.

How do we assess the condition?

What the condition ratings mean for accessories and what we check: How we check accessories.

How long does shipping take?

You can find shipping times and payment methods under Shipping and Payment.

How do I return an item?

You can request a return on the Returns page. Regardless of this, your statutory right of withdrawal still applies.
