What is a camcorder?
A video camera for capturing moving images and sound, usually designed to be handheld. Unlike a film camera, it records digitally and saves footage to tape, a card or a hard drive.
What types are there?
Depending on the year of manufacture, they use MiniDV tapes, DVDs, memory cards or internal hard drives. The main differences are the recording medium, resolution and audio features.
Can I transfer old recordings to my computer?
Usually, yes. Many camcorders have FireWire, USB or AV outputs. For MiniDV or Hi8, you will generally need suitable software or an adapter.
What can a camcorder do better than a smartphone?
It has a real zoom lens, a more stable grip, longer recording times and, depending on the model, better sound – some even have a microphone input.
Do they have microphone connections?
Some models have a 3.5 mm input or an accessory shoe. You can find out whether yours has one in the product description.
Which memory card do I need?
Many newer camcorders use SD or SDHC cards. The maximum supported capacity is stated in the product description.
Can I use a tripod and lighting?
Most have a tripod thread, and many also have an accessory shoe for lighting or a microphone.

For anyone who wants to film deliberately – holidays, children, vlogs – or who is deliberately looking for the look of older devices.
How do we assess the condition?

Are the battery and charger included?
Usually, yes, unless stated otherwise in the product title. Tapes and memory cards are not included.
