Light meter – frequently asked questions

Many film cameras do not have a built-in light meter. An external one will still tell you exactly which aperture and shutter speed to use.

What does a light meter do?

It measures light—either the light falling on the subject or the light reflected back. From this, it calculates the appropriate settings for aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.

Why do I need an external one?

Because many cameras do not have one, such as folding and plate cameras. And because an external device is often more accurate than an aging built-in one.

What is the difference between incident and reflected light metering?

With incident light metering, you measure directly at the subject how much light is reaching it—this is particularly accurate. With reflected light metering, you measure from the camera's position how much light the subject reflects, similar to a built-in meter.

What types are there?
  • Digital handheld light meters with a display
  • Analog devices with a needle or scale
  • Models that also measure flash or are designed for studio lighting
What do I set, and what do I read off?

You set the ISO and either the shutter speed or aperture, and the device provides the third value. Some also display the exposure value—practical for older cameras.

How do I measure correctly?

With incident light metering, you hold the device against the subject, not against the camera—at eye level for portraits. With reflected light metering, you aim at the subject; in backlit situations, you compensate upwards.

Are old devices still accurate?

Mechanical ones often remain accurate for a surprisingly long time. With electronic ones, the measuring cell can age. We check the function before setting it up.

Is it worth it for a digital camera too?

Usually not, as it has its own built-in meter. However, it can still be worth it in a studio or with continuous lighting.

How do we assess the condition?

Light meters are assigned a condition rating—usually Good, less often Acceptable or Defective. You can see which one it is by the symbol at the top left of the product image and as a line below the price. Find out more: How we check light meters.

Are batteries included?

No, batteries are not included.

How long does shipping take?

You can find shipping times and payment methods on Shipping and Payment.

How do I return an item?

You can request a return on the Returns page. Regardless of this, your statutory right of withdrawal still applies.
